shampoo basics, act two

In Act Two of shampoo basics (review Act One here), I'm asking you to avoid sulfates, which are commonly found in shampoos and can damage your hair, and I'm recommending some of my favorite shampoos without sulfates. This Alterna shampoo (and the matching conditioner) made my hair feel extra silky.

Sulfates, usually called sodium lauryl sulfate and found early on the ingredient list, have become public enemy #1 in the hair care world so it's easier now to find sulfate-free shampoos at various price points. L'Oreal's EverStrong was one of the first drugstore shampoos marketed as sulfate-free. It comes in several varieties (Reconstruct, Hydrate, etc.) depending on your hair needs; I found the Hydrate one effective for my hair.

Sulfates help your hair to suds up really well, but these chemicals also dry your hair out and can strip it of color, if your hair is color-treated. This shampoo is on the pricier side, but Pureology products are almost always worth the extra money.

Next time you wash your hair, check the ingredient list of your shampoo, and if there are any sulfates, try replacing it soon. Many shampoos have sulfate-free written on the front of the bottle, which makes it easier than ever to take care of your hair with a simple change.
