sock bun: create your own

You've likely heard of a sock bun to create those fabulous, nearly perfect buns, so I wanted to show you how to create your own and then style your hair with it.
My sister made a sock bun using one of my brother-in-law's old but clean socks. This isn't an ideal sock to use, but it'll work in a pinch. You could also use a more tightly woven sweater (one whose color even matches your hair).

First, cut off the toe of the sock. This can be ragged around the edges.
From the ankle part of the sock, begin rolling it up into itself, as my sister shows.
We just pulled the edges of the sock over the bun, but you could super glue them down if you wanted. This entire process took us less than four minutes, so it's easy to whip together if you wake up with a bad hair day.

Now for putting the sock bun in your hair. To begin, put your hair in a high ponytail.

Slip the sock bun over the tip of your ponytail and wrap the tip around the sock bun.

From this point, you will continue to roll the hair around the sock bun by continuing to turn it in on itself, much like you did when you created the sock bun.
Once it's rolled all the way down to your head, you'll likely want to pin the bun to your head to secure it and to hide any stray pieces of hair. I use hair pins for this step, rather than bobby pins, because they hold more hair.
Once completed, admire your gorgeous, feminine, and au courant do.
When first using a sock bun, you may have to try a couple of times before you get the technique down, but it's quite easy once you get the hang of of it.

  3. So cute! I've wanted to try this before but haven't gotten around to it yet. I need to because I wear my hair in a messy top knot quite a bit and this would give me some variety! ;-)

  5. Wow how creative - I wish I had any type of textile skills. My hair is too short for it, but it looks great nonetheless.
