blame soft hair on the rain

Bear with me on this post, dear readers, because I'm writing about rinsing your hair with rainwater. That's right. Years ago, my mom lived in Hawaii and she recently mentioned how its rainwater made her hair really soft. Because I am willing to experiment with products, I figured I'd try a free product right outside my window. (And it was an excuse to take shots of my hair afterward against my softest jacket.)
During a recent wintry storm, I put one of our pots on the fire escape to collect the water. By morning, I'd gathered more than a gallon of water, which I put into a clean milk container. Even though it wasn't Hawaiian rainwater, I was still excited to try it out.
After I shampooed and conditioned, I rinsed my hair with the rainwater. You've likely read that a cold water rinse is good for your hair because it closes the cuticles, so this rinse serves double duty. I've rinsed with the rainwater for three washes and so far, so good.

The pictures can't show you that my hair is soft, but it is! I'll admit that it may have more to do with my deep conditioning regimen, but I have also noticed that my hair doesn't get as oily since I've been rinsing with the rainwater. So keep your eye on the weather report and give this a try the next time there's precipitation!

  5. Oooh, this is interesting! I wonder why that works? Less chemicals? Who knows, but it is neat and worth a try if you live in a rainy area. ;-)

  6. Well, when hair is rinsed with hard water (and that's what most of us get as tap water) it reacts to it, so naturally soft less chemically treated rain water may really work better. :) Interesting tip! Must remember since we get a lot of rains here. :) x

  14. It probably depends on where you live and how hard the rainwater is! It's probably better in more rural areas because you don't have as many pollutants. I wouldn't wash my hair with Beijing rainwater, for instance, in a million years.
